Halibut fishing continues to be good out here, with big butts coming in over the weekend from Osama and Millsy. Average size was about 45lbs and the largest was 115lbs. We've had some big tides in the morning and we've been focussing around slacks and the smaller afternoon tides. Hali's have come off the morning tides but with the big exchanges that we have right now, the bites are few and far between until you get closer to slack.
We had a great group in guys in from the patch over the weekend, and we treated them to a real slayfest on Saturday and Sunday. These guys left on Sunday night with 240 pounds of vacuum-packed halibut fillets, sunburns and foggy memories of many a good time. Braggin rights to Scott Arthurs for hauling in the big one, 115lbs claimed the title. Who says you can't go to bed at 4:00 am and still whack fish the next day eh Dave, Grant...?
Salmon fishing dropped off on Saturday, but they were coming back on Sunday in the later afternoon. Monday morning saw some good bites at Whittlestone and Beale and Millsy picked up 6 springs out of there on the morning tide before getting sealed and heading for the hali grounds. Needlefish hootchies. All the fish were small and other guys fishing at Kirby and Beale were getting the same thing, lot's of small fish around right now.
Bait continues to be all over Barkley and offshore. Humpy's were breaching just off the coastline most of the weekend, we saw pods of porpoises over 100 in size, 2 pods of transient killer whales, one had at least 15 whales in it, and lots of herring, coho on the surface, etc...this place is alive right now.
The tides are getting smaller and we're moving back to a morning cycle, so things should be getting even better and we expect to see some more waves of bigger fish arrive this week.
