Nice early season adventure!
Loads of prawns and crab to start the morning, then off to the fish. Swell at the surfline was about two and a half meters, so trolling wasn't exactly comfortable...
Five pounder to the boat right away. Next fish legal, but on the bottom end and nicely lip hooked so sent him back. Next fish of the pickling size variety - oh oh...
Twenty minutes or so and one rod violently pounds - right on. For a few seconds, then Pat loses the deck of the boat and tumbles onto his buddy! Two men down and a rod that has definitely gone slack when other rod starts to dip. Pop that but no love..
Reset and work a little farther west. Another thirty minutes of nothing and BANG. Rod dancing, well off the rigger and peeling line. Hand it to Brian, who braces himself against the stern with legs spread and knees bent. Doesn't fall and directs a nice twenty pound spring into the net.
Rod back down, five minutes goes by and we've got another of the five pound variety. Fished for another 45 mins or so for nothing and headed home.
All in the middle of the tide exchange.
So I say get on out there! Oh yeah, oysters, mussels and clams are open again too. Ling cod opened for retention April 1 with lots around at this time of year. The halibut are in close to shore and weather permitting, usually pretty cooperative.
