Fishing Report Archives
Report Filed: April 15, 2009
There have been significant balls of bait showing all over Barkley sound. Humpback and grey whales are arriving daily to partake in the bounty. The herring survey for Barkley sound showed more fish spawning in the sound than predicted FOR THE WHOLE WCVI!!!
And then theres the fish. Every trip we have put effort into hooking springs since the beginning of March has produced fish in the 5-12lb range, with the odd 15 - 20 coming in as well. Springs still coming from the Whistle Buoy and Cape Beale. 3.5 inch flat grey coyote and 3.5 silver/holograph spoons have been the ticket.
Halibut fishing inshore and at the surfline is very good right now too. On Friday, my wife Jodi and I decided to try for her first ever halibut. We went about 3 miles offshore to the base of a nice pinacle, dropped the gear and waited for the tide to shift. Caught a few big ling cod in the meantime, and then, almost as though the dinner bell rang, ten minutes befor the tide shifted, Jodis rod doubled over and she was rewarded with a beautiful 35lb hali. Herring has thusfar been the bait for us.
As we had a 'chummer' on board, we decided to put her out of her mysery and head back to the barn.
The wind is the only thing that can get between us and the fish for the rest of the season.
