It's hard not to think about crabs and prawns though with the numbers that we have seen out here lately. Just astounding, full traps and full limits are the norm right now, not the exception, and it's been steady like this for over a month. The prawning typically is very good right up until mid-April and I couldn't even imagine it getting better than it is right now, but you never know?
Winter springs have been around in decent numbers over the past month and if you can get out between storms the action has been pretty steady. Lot's of little guys between 5-12 pounds, and the average is probably 6-7 right now. Fat and rock hard too, and perfect on the BBQ. They've been deep and full of bait, and with the herring showing up over the next few weeks and into March, there is going to be a lot of food swimming around out here.
Big bait balls have been seen all over Barkley Sound, and there's been lot's of activity on the water with whales and sealions and birds all gorging themselves at this time of year.
Action has been good around Bamfield Harbour and over towards the edge of the Broken Islands in towards Salmon Beach, which is a favourite herring spawning spot and usually produces good numbers of winter springs at this time of year. Rainy Bay and the backside are often good spots to check out at this time of year.
If you're itching to come out, take advantage of our spring specials, dust off the gear and get out here. It's looking like the start of a great year, and we're all pumped about what it's forecast to be like offshore this year.
Tight lines,
